Long tail is getting harder and harder to target on Google.
For example: After the google instant update Google automatically searches as you type. So you might have the intention of typing "amethyst earrings sterling silver" but you probably will start clicking results by the time you type "amethyst earrings". So the short tail keywords are poaching the longtail.
RankBrain also takes longer queries (like question queries) and converts them into shorter more concise but equivalent queries. So again the longtail is being funneled into the short tail.
There still is longtail opportunity but it isn't what it used to be and Google would rather convert it to short tail to drive up PPC bids and lower operating costs with better caching.
But yes... the easy rankings are still in longtail. There is just less traffic happening there now than in past years.
