I am building pages only for certain countries and certain languages and I would like to know what you all think is important to get a good ranking in local Google for example google.fr
If you want high ranking in google.fr what are the tricks and what is important?
French IP for your server? Links from other French sites?
Are there any guides regarding this?

Geo target your keywords.

I dont have an exact link to where you can do that, but google it lol.

Also i believe google picks up on the on-page language and ranks you accordingly.
 
If you want to rank high for geo targeted countries, then I suggest getting backlinks from those countries, so if you are targeting france, then get tons of .fr backlinks. This is one way to achieve the top rankings for that country.
 
Well for starters you should get a french hosting.I would go with .com domain because I believe that most people have the habit of typing that even when they are looking for a country specific site but that's totally up to you.All quality links are good so you shouldn't worry if not all your links come from french site as long as they are related you will preform well in the search engines.

Also add the site to your Google webmasters account go to setting and switch the geographic target to France.

As far as keywords go just use:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Just don't forget to switch the settings so that you will be targeting french results :)
 
I'm pretty sure this all makes sense:

Use the country specific TLD, not .com as google does favor .fr for France and .co.uk for UK etc, host the site in that country, set the geographic location for the site in Google Webmaster Tools.

It also makes sense that getting back links from that country would help and if definitely won't harm.
 
First question you will ask yourself, is what your structure should be. Here you have 3 possibilities, in order of "good" for seo:

1: Foreign TLD
2: Subdomains
3: Subfolders

I personally like the subdomains, it is easier to manage.

The 2nd most important factor is getting the foreign links. If you have a .fr domain, with lots of USA located links, you'll find yourself ranking in google.com (hl=en) but not is google.fr (hl=fr).

Most of the rest, all things keep the same.
 
In few words and grouping all the guys said and adding my comments:


  1. Use a hosting in the country
  2. Site content in the country lenguage
  3. Use a country specific domain (desirable but not mandatory)
  4. Set geo target in Google Webmasters Tools (this is why you can rank .com in other countries)
  5. Get backlinks from article directories in the specific lenguage you wanna rank.
  6. Register your site or business in google maps.
  7. Register in specific country web directories.
  8. Put an address in footer for the country you wanna rank.
  9. etc......

Thank you very much everybody for all your suggestions! Some of the things you all mention I am already familiar with but some things I never thought about. Like setting geo target in Webmaster tools.
 
even if you use .com instead of .fr , if the site is hosted on france then you will be given higher preference when your countrymen search.moreover you can use webmaster tools to specify the country - hope you are aware of that too.
