Hi!

If I want to make local website should I choose a domain name: businessname.city.com or businessname.com
Does the domain name matter in that case?

The first example is a sub-domain. Domain is city.com

Any link you build to a sub-domain will have little influence over main domains. That's why I prefer to work with inner pages.

Such as:
businessname.com/city

As tiberius said you are better off getting the main .com and building city landing pages e.g. domain.com/city-name < - landing page

no need for subdomain - use something like variations of businessnamecity.com, such as:
Dallasplumbing247.com

As SafeSEOBoost said choose a domain name includes both business name and your target locality instead of sub domains.
