local vs. global search?

Just trying to get a handle on the difference in the the big G's keyword tool...

for the keyword I typed in it has...

local search volume = not enough data
Global monthly search volume = 49,000


what is the difference?

Difference is just that in the country you are based in your keyword does not seem to be all too popular. Though google kwt could be wrong...happens...
