Hi there,

does anyone have any feedback on using google ads for a local service-based business?

If it is a local business and it is GMB, then read https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9847136?hl=en. These ads will appear on Google Maps and can be done only through smart campaigns in Google Ads, as explained in that article.
