Competitor has 250+ reviews and ranks #1 despite worse NAP consistency and zero backlinks.

I've got perfect citations, solid content, DR 30 links, stuck at #6.

Are we all just slaves to the review count algorithm now?

Reviews + responses to reviews are a huge ranking factor, but so is proper GBP and website optimization and synchronization.

Local SEO Without Reviews = Pointless?

It's not pointless, but it can be painful, as it takes time and tests your patience level.

As you mentioned, even after implementing all the local SEO strategies, you might not see the expected results soon. But you can get the result quickly by bringing frequent reviews with keywords.

Reviews = Final Boss!

In the last couple of years especially the last two reviews have become absolutely critical for Google Business Profile rankings. If your competitors are keep getting new reviews and you dont you will fall behind.

You need to find a way to generate more reviews or even buy them but only if they come from real people with real accounts. I know that’s not easy to find, but it is possible if you know where to look.

I actually ran a test few months ago to prove this . I took one of my GBP listings and did absolutely nothing else to it no new posts, no updated services, no photo uploads. The only thing I focused on was getting it more reviews. Then I compared the ranking with other GBPs I manage in the same area and industry that weren’t getting as many reviews. and the results were clear.

this scenario is common in 2026 local SEO, where Google has shifted to
heavily prioritizing user-experience signals (reviews, velocity, and relevance)
over traditional SEO metrics like backlinks and perfect citations

Reviews definitely play a big role in local SEO rankings, but they aren’t the only factor. While your competitors 250+ reviews give them a clear edge other factors like relevance, proximity and the quality of citations still matter

Being stuck at 6 despite good citations, content, and backlinks could mean you're missing out on local signals like Google My Business optimization, local keyword targeting, or proper category setup You might want to focus on encouraging more reviews and improving your GMB presence while continuing to build backlinks and content.

Reviews arent everything but they sure give a boost especially in competitive local markets.
