I have a client who offers home services and wants to extend his practice across 4 close-by cities (all within 1 hour driving).
I have an idea to buy 4 different domains with his service and each city name (ex. homeservicenorthampton.com, homeservicebedford.com, etc) build for each of them a google my business and redirect all the sites to a main one.
What do you think of this idea?

I would rather make one domain homeservice.com and make specific location pages. So homeservice.com/northhampton , homeservice.com/bedford etc. And in those specific pages fully focus on your keyword + location. It would be way more organized and saves time if you would start with linkbuilding later on

That is way too complicated. Why not build out city specific pages on one domain and then just have multiple GMBs?

I agree with this, I've done this method before for previous clients
