BHW- I've been lurking and commenting in and out of others threads but haven't contributed much so figured since we do quote a bit of client
local seo I would give back a bit to the community.

    What was once isn't now.
Google places / + etc used to be very simple. You create your G places listing, get a few citations and make sure it has the keywords in place with a link to your site, conveniently
optimized website for your local city + keyword and you were ranking in the 7 pack in no time.

    What has happened?
Well think about this- IF Goog kept things constant, the game would be a snap. And how many people would advertise with Google? Few. But let's consider
if you ran google and you could keep the serps in constant flux..then what? Obviously paid ads are more constant-- all you need to do is pay constantly and your ads will more than
likely show regularly, unlike the serps.

Google figured this out in the serps and took it local, so to rank consistently is a challenge to say the least. And even if you get all your ducks in a row, the randomization of google and their algo's will
more than likely have you finding your listing in and out of the 7 pack.
But nonetheless, many people still pay good money to rank locally, so here is what is working for our clients as of the last 6-8 weeks:

    A) Consistency of NAP (name address and phone #). The first and foremost thing you should do to make sure your site and listings are consistent with the same information (conduct a citation audit).
Whitespark has a tool that can do this for you or you can simply use GOOG search queries to see what comes up for your name, address and phone #, then make an excel spreadsheet and highlight the listings that are incorrect..

B)Fixing the junk in the trunk

This is a time consuming process, going to each citation listing that is in error and fixing it, and the bummer is, many will take months to update. You can counteract this or dilute this process by adding more listings with the correct NAP so google understands as a higher % of probability that you are who you say you are.

    C) Contact the directories or citation providers via contact form or email-
If you find some citations where you cannot access, consider using something like this:

My name is [your name], and I am the internet marketing manager at [client name] ? [insert their URL]
We have recently gone through a contact audit and as a result, some of our business information is now outdated. I noticed an error in your information[insert link to info].
Unfortunately we no longer have access to this profile, and as such we were hoping you might be able to update this for us.
    Our correct information should read:
    [insert correct info]
Please let me know once you have made the corrections and thank you!.

    [iyour name]
    [insert client business name]

    D) More NAP's aren't always king
We've noticed maybe 20-30 citations with a solid foundation of reviews on said citations does wonders over having say, 50-100+ citations. Don't ask me why, but this is our observation. Do what you will with it.

    E) Yelp If I didn't know better I would swear yelp and G are in bed together. Yes I said it. G gives yelp carte blanche like wikipedia throughout the serps, and it's frustrating since yelp is such a scam. But, use them to your benefit. There are yelps in every city/country and you can create many "related" listings> The more internal links in yelp the more juice and benefit your listing will get..but be sure to use the same NAP!. Spend time in yelp and reach out to others and make friends..comment on related business etc. More internal links means more juice for you.

And the big little secret in local seo:
Long tail local youtube video's STILL rank incredible well, and are very easy to optimize. Say you had a air conditioning repair business in Los Angeles- simply use your company NAME, the keyword and city in your title, and link your website and google map url in the video description, and usually in very little time you should be on page one (for average comp serps).
Like anything else Youtube, likes, views and channel will play into your success, but if you make 2-5 videos (short- say 60 seconds or less) all around the same local keyword, I would bet money one more more will get to page one.

And that's it folks. Local Seo, Summer 2013 style

    hey affarmy,

great post thanks! is it possible to rank local review sites in google places and yelp if you keep the address and info the same for each listing? If not, are there any solutions to getting on google places if you have multiple businesses on your site?

I had a similar question to you -

When you rank the videos.. Have you found the site and video in the same search? Have you done it with an article, video, and site on one term? We just started doing it but looking for some results and how others have covered up a search with it.

Ive seen dupes in Yelp but not in G places..
For multiple businesses if they have unique phone numbers you might try adding suite A etc to your addy..
as long as you can get the post card you should be good. I'm assuming the building or space is very large..

Thanks for the response affarmy but my question came out completely wrong. What I was trying to say was that I have a site that ranks dentists in the area. However, I can't get it above google places so I was thinking of creating my own google places with a fake address so that my site could get some more looks. Have you ever done this and is it a viable option?
