I know there are some Local SEO specialists out there so I have some questions.

If a customer has a service based business that goes to different locations but his business is in a small city how do you go about ranking them for a larger city?

Example, Lets say I have an interested client that is a Plumber who's office is in "Small City" but he does most of his business in "Bigger City" how do I get him going for the keyword "Plumber Bigger City"?

My understanding is that citations mixed with some mild link building makes it pretty easy for some of these local businesses to rank but what if they prefer to rank for a different city that has more search volume?

Focus on the larger city if the client does most of their work there.

Yes, that is what I am doing and it is coming around but does the fact that has has a G Place listing with his "small city" address cause any issues in your experience?

I think I have it sorted out. Looks like it will be easier to rank for "small city" due to the G places listing and if I want him to rank for other "bigger cities" we have to create more pages for each city we want to rank for and do some linkbuilding for these pages. Its what I expected but was making sure I was not missing something obvious.

Thanks

You can rank for those other cities organically by building out subpages for them, or you can get an address in that city somehow if you want to get 7 box listings.

It's not link building. GET RID OF THAT TERMINOLOGY right away.

It's "LINK EARNING."

You can rank 1st page for <100 "links" if done extremely properly.

I would utilize G+ though and build his following in the city you are attempting to rank for -- no guarantees!

Anybody who follows/adds you to a circle on G+, and then searches for "plumber BIG CITY", you will show up as the #1 result if you post a simple G+ "Plumber Big City" + "PHOTO". -- This is the future.

P.S. - A P.O. Box in the "bigger city" would suffice for creating a completely "separate business". Or you can also use "1234 BLVD Suite 1A" "1B" "1C" etc.

Great question. How much is your current budget for creation ? I am not a big fan of automated systems but we've been using Moz dot com / local and its working great. So far we have seen one clients website rank higher for
local keywords... 2nd I can't stress enough reviews. I've seen one lawyer client go from maybe 20 calls a month to about 50 a month just from getting to 11 reviews (google). Its a game changer... would you trust a lawyer with no reviews vs one with a few to a lot..... 3rd throw some money at Google Adwords Express... yes I said Express... we do full custom SEM campaigns here that start at $10k so most small businesses can't afford it. With express its not as robust but it can pin point people who are interested in your service / product... there are other benefits too...Enjoy ! I left a few couple secrets out too but you should be able to figure it out.

If he gets most of his business from the big city, then I'd re-target the homepage for the big city keyword.

Could the G+ local listing be considered "in the area" of the big city?

Cause I've ranked top 4 for the main city + kw when the business listing is way outside (but within the county).

G+ - Google Reviews - Links to Main Site - Citations.

Winning formula.

can you still edit you business page on google+ you used to be able to update what cites you cover, but google changes stuff all the time so it may have changed since I have had to care.

theres an option to add cities and zips when listing your business also. I like the google+ idea + citations + inner pages + backlinks ideas

Im amazed at the amount of bs going in this thread.
the best n easiest way to get ur client going on that big city's G page is by editing the G places listing and making the service delivery ratio reach that big city, then help it up with some BL's
