I've been working with a small business to get their site optimized, and in doing more locally targeted SEO, I've been trying to get Google Places to update their keywords, however, after some frustration it seems that Google has two different spots for their business, one in Google Maps and another in Google Places...

Would anyone know how to get the Maps to use the Places data? Or will this just always be setup as two separate locations within Google and I'll have to just keep both updated?

You want maps and places to have data that coincides (or is the same). Google the search term "mapmaker", go to the first link and you can see (for google mapmaker), and edit your business details. Note that you may have to log into mapmaker with a different account to approve any changes you made, even if you are the business owner.
