***LOCAL SEO QUESTION*** Whats more important to rank a local website?

Hi mates.

Need to know one thing... I want to rank a website in my small country but I dont have the budget for everything.

Whats more important to pay for?

For example, if my country is USA what should I do?

Should I HOST that domain on USA SERVER IP or should I buy the domain .us?

I think its the server ip that have more value but in my country the servers are much more expensive than the domain for that country.

Probably should I get both?

^^ I've heard people hosting their sites on US ips but their site in another language. Can anyone confirm if building links through local sites/blogs will ultimately decides which country google will rank you in?
 
I don't think hosting makes a difference since you can geo tag the site to the location the business is located, and you should do that anyway. Just do your research and make sure your geo tagging properly.

If you're talking about Jamaica, then your extension is .jm.

I'd host in a US data centre as it will be cheaper, use a .jm extension and set Jamaica in Google Geo tag.

This is of course, if you're building a reasonable site and don't mind letting Google know who you are! Plus, we're assuming here that you're trying to increase local rankings - not worldwide.

I can't think it will be hard to rank for a Jamaica service - the local competition can't be that high!

I used to SEO for some keywords like forex, gold...And I suggest that you should build backlinks that must come from English websites. I mean you should focus on building backlinks that belong to your local country. This will help you much to increase ranking. And also try to build links on related websites.
