I have a list of a few hundred local directory sites that I want to create pages for my friends business. Is this something that should be spread out over time or is it alright to create pages for them all within a few days?

Do like 20 a day and see where it gets you.

If his site is new then start slow.

And trust me, you'll be annoyed by the time you get to the 20th submission and you'll want to stop anyways lol ;)

This guy's site was made in 1996 lol. Hope that makes things a little easier for me

if the directory is a anchor text back to your friends site then yes spread them out like everyone's saying, but if it's like a business name address and no links to your friends site, then blast the crap out of these directories it would benefit greatly for serps

Yes.
Even matt cutts a long time ago said that directories were not black hat and he encouraged people to register in directory. I can tell you from experience that 50 new links in directories per day is ok.

Blast the crp out of those directories.
Why do you think it's blackhat to submit to business directories?

i would just do as many as you can as i cant see it been classed as blackhat

you can start with 20 per day and spread it evenly, not all 20 in a single go, do it in regular intervals of time. Though 20 per day is just a starting figure, if you can manage then you can try for 40 to 50 too.

Build them as natural looking as possible. If they are high quality and a good page rank, don't over do it.

Google is a directory...

So you want to show in Google?
Ok - I'm assuming "yes" so ask "Why"
answer likely to be "Because potential clients/buyers finding my site their and the traffic I get from that is important to my business Google offers a search for my business and traffic for my business - they are respected [by some] and market leaders in the field of directories"

Right - so now you know what you are looking for.

Are their other directories that cater for your specific niche? Have decent authority (use PR if you can't find authority)? Do not require you to pay and offer some small other benefits in terms of visibility/authority transfer/traffic?

Some other directories will - most won't.
Post to those that will
Ignore those that don't

Chances are out of a list of say 2000 directories on average there might be 50 that will actually benefit any particular site. Which ones they are will depend on the niche and other factors of the site.

Scritty

not at all
i ranked my website on page 2 of google only doing directory submission
