What I'm talking about is a broad term being searched, displaying local results. For example, if you're in Hollywood, CA and you search "Chinese food", the search results that show up are locations and websites for local restaurants around Hollywood. How do I find out how many searches per month these keywords are getting in that specific area?

Dang man I bought a tool like that from dr dan and ben it helps you do exactly what your asking plus a bit more but I cant remember there website it has something to do with roadmaps or something like that. I cant share the tool because it asks for password etc and well I dont want them to ban me as Im starting a local pay per call company for my kids to run. But sure do hope I was of some help.

to get a rough estimate I would
Internet users in state / internet users in country * local searches

Obviously this is a very rough and highly inaccurate as you have to count a lot of factors , but for a start its okay.

You can add yourself to that google local stuff, having your phone number and address appear under your domain in the serps.
