Local listing country-wide?

Anyone has done that, or has some examples for local Country-wide listing?

E.q. is it possible to target "bakery in US" instead "bakery in NY" and get listed on the local results?

Never tried it, it doesn't make any sense. Why would you do that? Putting "bakery in NY" is much more convenient to rank than "bakery in US". Using this "bakery in NY" is because your business is specifically located in New York and there are a better chance of ranking against bakeries in New York than competing with bakeries in whole US.

There are some niches that it makes sense for, for example tourism.

I hope I understood your question correctly. If you're talking about Google Places on Google Venice SERP displays hell no, you can't. Your Places profile is locked into the address you provide so if your business is on Whatever Street, New York, you'll be relevant for "tourism agency NY". Being local on a country wide level with only one resource is a contradiction in terms...

If you're talking about seo-ing your website in that direction, why not? If the traffic/demand is consistent and your business can be carried out across the country you could target the keyword.

Also, you could build subdomains for every state or city you're interested in and rank locally too, for example LosAngeles.yoursite.com if you want to rank for "tourism agency Los Angeles". There are endless possibilities but they're all limited by your strategy and your end game (final goal).

Thanks for clearing that up. You got me right, its the Google Places I was interested in. Its a shame one cannot get a listing on a country-wide level, that would be way more useful than city-wide level for the niches I'm thinking about.

Google Places was thought up to be a platform where you could find, in your city, pinpointed on a map, the business you're interested in. Doing Places on a national level kinda beats the purpose.

If you're interested in national coverage, that's where SEO comes in, but sadly, if someone searches for "tourism agency" inside the US, he'll probably get the Google Venice display for listings in his town or city, so your SEO efforts won't get to him (this has to be tested, this is just a logical assumption). Adwords could be an answer, due to the fact that you can optimize your campain for the local markets and be displayed along side the local listings.

Also, you could take in consideration content marketing, generating traffic and leads by useful articles oriented on long tail keywords.

As I said, there are endless possibilities. They all depend on your strategy and the goals.

Agree to that. Google Places is for local business or atleast has a branch location on a specific city, if you really want to go on country-level I guess you need to go back to the "organic SERP SEO on country-level".

Google places is used to target specific cities. I'm not discouraging you in doing local-listings but I think this is not the campaign suitable for your goal.

You can't do it in places, unless you do it by "opening" a branch there with a virtual offics and number.

There is no reason to target this term with SEO unless you see traffic in Google for the exact term.

If I were going to be a scammer, I would sell the "service" of delivering local results for all the cities in a particular region, such as a state, aka optimizing for "Montana Fudgepackers" would deliver local results in all the local searches for the entire state. Since so many people so fervently hope and believe that this is possible, they are RIPE for the plucking, fat clucking chickens, all it would take is for some shiny dude in a nice suit to tell them he can help them to "dominate" the "entire state", with results guaranteed in 3 months.

Not that I would do such a thing. But when grown men still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny AND the Tooth Fairy, they certainly deserve SOME kind of kick in the ass, to wake them up.
