What kind of heavy traffic? How many pageviews?

What are the resources on the server?

High Availibility infra are complex and not easy to achieve. You would need to split apache and MySQL.
You need to define the load issue you are facing and see whether a VPS upgrade could solve the issue.
There must be dozens of reasons why the load can go sky high and the answer isn't always going for an HA setup. (slow hard drives , apache slots, bad PHP optimization, no caching system, bad MySQL queries, and so on.. )

My point is that there must be some intermediate step you can take to make it better before thinking of such infrastructures which aren't generally done with VPSs by the way but dedicated servers. Since the VPS are scalable it doesn't make much sense ;)

Move to nginx and use the caching options, it will handle over 10k pageviews without a problem.
Next, install apc caching for php and the w3cache plugin for wordpress to lower as much as you can your current load.

Since you have traffic from reddit, most of the users there use adblockers, so adsense+reddit is not a good idea. Regarding the load sharing that you want to implement, i would suggest increasing the memory (RAM) first. 76MB of ram is really low, considering that a slipstreamed linux needs at least 32MB of RAM. Try to upgrade your memory and install nginx, it is a little bit more forgiving to the memory than apache.
