I think general directories will take you so far, a way better practice is to find directories that are relevant to your niche. Search for niche + directory

So people are still using directories? I would imagine that Google would have "a bad eye" for directories.
I understand it differs from directory to directory (like any other site), but the whole idea of a directory doesn't fit into, what I thought, Googles idea of SEO.
What does more experienced people think?

Local and niche directories will still help you - obviously moderation is key. If all your backlinks are from directories then this can be a problem. Its important to mix it up.

You aren't going to rank high using just directories but if you are posting only to manually approved directories and they are not dodgy then you should be fine to do so.
It is one of those things that may not add a huge amount to your ranking but if done correctly shouldn't have a negative effect and could add a bit of diversity to your link profile if nothing else. After all there are not many spammy sites out there that are going to the effort of submitting to directories these days.
