List Marketing suggestions

I've never really sent emails before but I'm planning on getting into with with a couple of niches. I've seen people rave about aweber, but they are not the cheapest. GetResponse looks interesting too and is cheaper. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what a good service to use for this purpose?
