I believe that if you have something really interesting to offer them, then it whouls be easy for them to follow the simple steps.
Make sure you offer your freebie not on the thank you page, but somewhere on the confirmation page once they click the link in your email.

Edit: Rather then a general step by step, you should put something like :

If you're using an HOTMAIL/LIVE/OUTLOOK email:

Instruction on how to white list

If you're using GMAIL:

You have nothing to do etc... In case the email is not arrived, check bla bla bla

Yeah, when the person submits his/her email then the success page will tell them to check their email and then I have a big NB! If you use hotmail/outlook/live: Do step 1, do step 2 etc.
