Linux IM bots

This might sound like a dumb question, and I apologize for it if it is, but, are there any IM bots out there that run on Linux? I only hear about Windows-based bots, but never Linux.

And if not, why aren't people making it? Seems to be a market that is highly untapped, from my untrained eyes. It would def. open doors for people as to the places they can host them (VPS and so on).

Thoughts?

I hate that ever since i started this journey I cant boot on linux any more, at least not if i want to use the tools that somebody else has already made
 
But can it actually be done, code for Linux IM bot? I have no idea about this, so I ask. ;) Hopefully the answer is yes.
 
I would think so but you would have to pay someone to code it for you.

What language is used for it? I know Vb.net and so on is for Windows stuff, but for Linux I have no clue. I am Googling stuff as we speak, but I wanted to ask the BHW community as well seeing as though I am looking for bots geared for IMing.

As far as being "publicly" available to buy or download, I do not know of any.
But I'm sure some can be ran on Linux as not all bots are created in Windows only programming languages.

That is because most of the people that buy software/bots are Windows-only users.
The creators of the software go where the money is usually. And, if you create software for money, the money is majorly in Windows.

Most that develop for Linux are usually those that only program for themselves (such as myself).
It's not that the door hasn't been opened, it's just that we don't broadcast it to the world :)

Ah, I see. lol Thanks for the info. I just wondered this because MANY people here like to run bots on VPS's and so on, so I thought well, Linux-based ones are the cheapest, so why not code for Linux. At least offer it to people as an alternative, if they want. They would be able to pick up more customers along the way, in my opinion, because the ones that use Linux-based VPS, would jump at the chance to pick one up, rather than change to a Windows-based server.

The first problem is that in this particular case there are at least hundreds of (public) linux distros (types/versions) out there so the creators of the bots would have to try to make it "universally" acceptable amongst most linux distros, or focus on supporting it for popular linux distros only (CentOS/RedHat, Ubuntu/Ubuntu Server, Fedora, etc).

Secondly, most of the bots in the IM world for sale are created off of programming languages that do not have much Linux support. For example, Microsoft's .NET languages like C# and VB.net (the most popular here) are only supported on Linux using third-party tools. Microsoft doesn't natively support them.
Another popular programming language here, Delphi, is not yet ready to be used on Linux either.

But if you can code and sell for both Windows and Linux then try to find a strategy that works best for you. Offering a Linux version as an alternative, as you mentioned, can be a good strategy as well :)
 
There are some, generally coded in Java, and hence OS independent.

wget is a program for downloading files via HTTP, HTTPS and FTP.

It's not a scraper as it does not extract any data from the URL you give it. It just downloads the whole file.
 
Anything can be done on linux, but it's probably harder to make it worth for the author, there is only a fraction of linux users compared to windows. I solved this situation by running virtualized windows machine for IM bots I use. My primary system remains Linux.
 
You can also install Windows XP/7 whatever windows you want on virtualbox.
 
People go where the money is, and whats more well known, hence bots for windows. It would be cheaper in terms of running linux based VPS's, but not EVERYONE uses VPS's for their bot needs. I can't see anyone wasting their time programming any IM bots based in a linux language for the fact there just isn't enough "want" for it.
 
a simple Python script can or shell script can pull the trick. The problem with Linux is that things come and go very quickly. Not that they disappear, but that someone picks them up and puts atop an ugly, cumbersome UI and starts selling to the windows guy as new stuff. Who would like to tweet from the CLI, nobody, but you can - the is no lighter twitter-app than that.
 
You can do it in python, ruby, scala or Java, well Java is the solution for me. I have already made few bots in it. One scraper which use jsoup library, one email verifier which use java mail library and one account creator whic use selenium wedriver to drive the firefox and chrome. Now creating a article spinner. As far as c and c++ is concern, forget about it. It may take few decades to make a simple bot.
