Either you have a relatively easy keyword and your site just needed a little push or it has nothing to do with this small link wheel. Just 1 day feels like it is to soon for such a result.

I would go for the "little push" theory.

I think Google recognizes link wheel, also if you are doing effort for 15 days and then do not work for another 15 days, and on 31st day if you work, it does not mean that the effort of 31st day alone brought the result.

In an exam you never succeed by reading only on last day, the whole year preparation goes behind your success.

so what is the status of your site now.
It must have come on #5 page 1 due to some good linking but then Google must have penalized you for overdoing or something to return to page 2.

I do not have much knowledge of linkwheel but what I understand is that they initially crawled some of the sites of linkwheel and you came on page 1, but as I understand linkwheel makes the search engines crawl again and again like a wheel, the Google understood the trick and penalized you with -10 ranks or so.
