I was trying to find a simple clever way to prevent page rank leakage using something like below.

    <span onclick="window.open('http://www.example.com')">example.com</span>

But google detected it as an outbound link. I know I can get around this doing the re-direct server side on a postback/submit. But I was hoping to do something a little more elegant without using server side code to do the re-direct.

Any suggestions? Really want the convenience of links for my readers, but I don't want the link juice evaporating to other sites.

If I have to resort to server-side postbacks/submits I will.

no follow - was always the traditional method, however i think there is a misconception of how it works.

outbound links dont diminish your sites power. the formula splits the standing power of your site amongst the others but it does not take away your ranking. your ranking stands. if any sites power was deminished by out going links the maths would determine that no links would hold power at all.

the simplest way to understand it. the president has power, and by virtue of his association to his clerk (who is nothing more than a type writer operator) the clerk has power. yet this power does not in any way diminish the power of the president. it is power by association. links work the same way, except maths is the deciding factor. Maths dictate that if the origonal page is worth 1 unit, then all other pages take their measure from this. if that original page lost its value, then all other pages can only ever aportion and never supercede. therefore links would = 0. not true

That's the issue, If page A has 500 power - and Page A has 5 outbound links and 5 internal links. Then Page A is giving 1/10 it's Rank Juice to each link on the page. (No-follow is useless now.) So in order for me to pass 1/5 of Page A power to my 5 Internal links, I need to eliminate the 5 external links. To eliminate the 5 External links, but keep the same functionality, II need to do the redirect server side, so google can't see the links to follow. since google is not going to do a forum submit/postback.

I was hoping google didn't understand links in a span tag to avoid the submit/postback, but apparently it does.

It's all about Page Sculpting your page rank.

i see where your coming from, its not about diminishing your power but redirectng it back to your own pages before the juice goes to outside pages.
