Is it really bad for SEO to put backlinks in other sites footer i've developed?

They wont be very valuable for you from an SEO point of view but maybe for referral traffic. But make sure you only use your brand or naked URL as the anchor text.
 
if i put the links in footers of authority sites?
 
If you are going to do that, you should make sure they are not sitewide footer links. Those could actually harm your rankings

I have seen people putting links in site they developed and they are doing well; if you are a web design firm, then it works and it makes sense; links are usually in footer and site wide and this is not an issue; the issue is when people "abuse" this, so keep it less than 10-20% of your referring domains.
 
Best practice is to add nofollow to these links to avoid risk and add diversity to your link profile.
 
Homepage (footer, sidebar,header..) links are the best links you can get, from real sites (of course). Anyone telling you how this is bad for you is either lying or knows shit.
 
Just make sure you don't use any keywords in the anchor text or you will risk over-optimization. URL or branded anchors and you should be fine, are we talking a few links or thousands of links?

It depends. If the link is placed in the footer with small font etc just for seo purpose it will have low value, golden rule of link building is to build them for TRAFFIC, that way google also loves them.

Just google how big brands got penalties for doing that, they sold links on their homepage footer, and that was in 2013 or so, at the moment google is smarter about this issue.

Google is not "smarter about that issue" , homepage links will rank you 10 times faster than inner page links. Thats a fact.

I don't want to fight, I agree that in certain cases these links are very effective, but if it looks way too spammy it usually causes problems sooner or later. Peace.
 
If you follow role that link is a link, than it will help. But if you want quality link then footer links not plays important role .
