Let's say I have page1 and I naturally link to page2 from the body of the article.
At the same time, page1 links to page2 from the side menu as a recommended article.
My opinion (and I've seen it many times): google will only count the first in-content link and the other link is just there for easy navigation... So I see no problems at all.

What is your opinion?

Wouldn't Google count that as spam?

I have read an article before that each link is treated individually like every other link on the page. This means that the target would gain ranking from both.

As long as you don't overdo it and the side menu link lives up to its billing, (The article is actually worth recommending) I don't see the harm in it.

The key is to look natural as far as Google is concerned.

Now, if you overdo it and you put a ton of internal links on the "recommended article" list, that might be an issue.

But generally speaking, if you look at high-authority sites and how they link, they sometimes linked to the same site several times from several different pages on the same site, and the pages that they link to rank well.

So, it depends on how natural everything looks.

But ultimately, it boils down to the value of interlinking.

Remember, the reason why sites are supposed to link to each other is because the page that you're linking to acts as some sort of value extension or content extension of the page you're linking from.

If that's not present, then there's going to be an issue.

I do what feels the most natural and user friendly.

Google will only count the link from page 1 to page 2. The side menu with the recommended articles won't count as a link imo. It's only used for a navigation. But don't over do with that.

Linking to the same page multiple times does not cause problems, Google just ignores the second link in terms of PageRank and anchor text.
