Linking techniques, how many?

Hey all

So when creating forum profiles and other techniques of getting backlinks where you can insert code to get the anchor text for your URL, how many links would say is maximum?

Say I have 4 pages I want to build, should I post 4 on each page or just go round rotating the links?
