Linking back from category descriptions to main website: good idea?

I am building an ecommerce website and am planning to link back from product category descriptions to the main website/main url. Is that a good idea regarding SEO or absolutely not done? What do you guys suggest? What worked out best for you?

I don't see any point in this, as your category page is linking to your homepage anyway. Linking from the meta description would be irrelevant.

I could be wrong, but from my personal experience, being online from '97, I have never seen a URL in a meta description before.
