Honestly, most people treat LinkedIn connections like a vanity number. But from what I have seen after working with 300+ service businesses, the real use cases are very specific.
First, your connections are your distribution network. Every time you post, your 1st degree connections see it first. So if you have 2000 random connections versus 2000 targeted ones (service business owners, agency founders, decision makers), your content reaches completely different audiences. Quality matters way more than quantity here.
Second, and this is something most people miss, connections unlock Sales Navigator filters. If you are doing any kind of outreach, having the right connections means better lead list results because LinkedIn shows you 2nd and 3rd degree connections based on your network.
Third, warm outreach. I have tested cold DMs versus warm DMs (where you are already connected and have engaged on their posts for a few days). The reply rate difference is massive. Cold DMs get maybe 5 to 8% replies. Warm ones after engaging get 25 to 35% easily.
So the short answer is, connections are not just for show. They are the foundation of your content reach, your lead targeting, and your outreach response rates. Build them with intent, not randomly.
