• Often put a personal message in it! Tell the guy how you know them. Do not give requests for connections to people you don't meet, who have no good reason to want to meet you. If they decline your invitation because they don't know you, it gets classified as spam. LinkedIn will restrict you from attempting to connect with more people after having a few of your requests marked as spam.
• Tell them why you want to connect to them. Forgetting to do this will cause some people to reject your request because if they do agree, they don't know what to expect from you. Make sure the reason is personally valid. Generic reasons point to a low effort.
• Give them a reason for needing to connect. Many ways to do so include helping to assist them, following up on what you talked in person, and showing gratitude for it.
