Here is a list of questions I have regarding link building that experienced users can answer and will be of great use to other newbies like me:

* Should I build links to main domain, inner pages or both?

* What should be a rough ration of links built to main domain vs inner pages

* Do links pointing to inner pages increase overall site SERP or SERP of other pages?

* Are links that wrap an image and point to my site beneficial, or only text anchored links are of use?

Any additional advice you could add is greatly appreciated.

You should build links to both but mainly to your homepage if you are trying to rank it for a kw. I say 50-70% to main page and 30-50% to inner pages. Links to inner pages will increase ranks of those pages and site overall. Image links are beneficial too but build more text anchored links. Do about 5% for image links

I think that's still too many for the homepage and besides, it's not really that clear of an answer. I don't even think the relation is linear. You'd have to look how many pages you have total. The more you have, the more of a percentage would go to those in my mind. More info.

Branding - Built back-links to the main domain first, Create some authority to your relevant niche. The inner pages sure ranks automatically.
For Ex: If you have 1000000 products in your websites. Is it possible to target every inner pages. Remember E-Commerce SEO.

We don't have a constant ratio - It is advised to go, based on the rankings/traffic.

Point to inner pages also a credit to other pages.
Note: Pointing to the main domain boost the SERP's of the inner pages

Avoid text anchors for better results. Image/Banner links is kind of advertorial. Matt Cutt gave a warning signal to advertorial campaigns

You want to build back links to your inner page too.......it is a organic way and you are also increasing the power of your home page..

I'd never given much thought to inner pages but having read this I think its time I did

There is no definite guide for what you should do or what you should not.. All you can do is plan some linking strategy
1) Yes inner pages should have inbound links coming in for few reasons
> just to make your site real( if your 100 pages site has 10k links and all of them just pointing to homepage, it is definitely spam. No natural linking process would get links to just homepage unless it is some tool website
> Increasing innerpage authority will increase the whole site authority
> The more number of pages of a website ranks, the more is the trust
2) The number ratio depends on the type of website you have and the number of pages you have on it and what few innerpages in that are very important
3) If the site homepage and innerpages are having backlinks from some good authority websites, it will definitely help a bit more in overall serps than just getting backlinks to the homepage.
4) Variation in the types of backlinks is always good but dont overdo with just one variety.
