My experience is: it works well for bringing traffic, but I'm not sure if it helps at all for rankings.
Still, it's worth doing: just go down to the bottom of an article and add your site to the list of External Links.
Make sure it's relevant to the content on that page or it'll get deleted right away.
What's a drag about Wikipedia is: if you have competitors and are targeting a keyword with a lot of competition, the weenies will likely delete your link and replace it with your own.
There are page monitors available that will automatically send you an email if your link disappears...but for me the whole process of re-creating my links just got to be to much work.
Still - sometimes you get lucky and post a link on a page where the link doesn't get deleted, and where your competitors, for whatever reason, don't notice it...
