Ever since about mid april, link building seems to have no effect whatsoever on any sites i work with. Two have had unnatural link messages, but the others ranked well and had no messages right up till penguin's first update a few days ago... Then they dropped for a lot of keywords.

Has anyone had any success ranking with the traditional linking methods?

How exactly are you linking? It's all about diversity right now, in both backlink types and also anchor text.

Social does nothing... I've been trying this extensively across thousands of accounts and getting no boosts in SERP.

High quality spun web 2.0s (500%+ uniqueness) work the same... especially great results when tiering with additional web 2.0s and powering the structure with PR blogposts.
There's a big schtick right now to do unique web 2.0s, which is a bit silly honestly.

I have the exact same thing on my one site. It too has an unnatural link warning and no matter what I throw at it, it just keeps dancing in the 100+ serps zone. This was since Panda, nevermind Penguin. Im about to do a massive site wide copy overhaul (40 or so pages) and hoping this will get me back on track.

Add more content. I cannot stress how important new content is. They're moving away from traditional methods of determining what "reputable" content is. Backlinks are meaning less and less now that their technologies are improving, so now it's based on the context of the content. If they see that you're uploading more and more content related to the subject, why would it matter if you knew anything about SEO? For example, I've seen many personal blogs rise to the top in many keywords after the updates. It makes sense because - just because they don't know how to build links and how to do SEO doesn't mean they're not reputable. The best cook in the world might not have an idea about how to perform SEO, so why should his content not be at the top? In connection with social networking, that just comes with being reputable. "If your content is worth sharing, it'll be shared.", that's their philosophy. Of course one could always do that blackhat, but content will always be the main source of reputation.

You guys are just waisting your time, if you had unnatural message nothing you throw at it that will bring it back. just get a new website and start all over again, and once the penalty expired on the first domain 301 it to the new one. Goodluck

if by linkbuilding you mean blasting comments on bad quality spammy blogs i agree with you
but good linkbuilding as describe some post above works damn well and if with that you have an EMD it's easy to go for the #1

I've been studying your spinning methods and even started implementing them (asked s friend who's studying programming to write me something similar to UberCubez for like $10) but there's one thing I don't get. You often say about uniqness at level like 500%. What metric do you use? I own TBS and it seems almost impossible to achieve uniqness at such a high level. Is there a simple method to calculate that metric to this from TBS?

Or do you just get this 500% in TBS? :]

Ultimate Demon calculates uniqueness like this. Currently I am at 350 to 400% unique. Aiming at 1000%.

Not sure what other tools can be used for this. I wrote a thread recently though that gives a rough idea of how many times you can use a spun article.

I agree. Content is king. Well, actually it was and always been google's top guideline. But many of us here have great content and great sites. They just cannot put all those sites together at the top. and thats the bad part

Absolutely false. My WMT account was filled with these messages, and it took me about one day to clear each site with Google clearing the message within a week.

    How did you clear them?

I have been going back and forth 3 times with reconsideration requests. Im having no luck.

On the other hand I have started a new site and within 2 weeks im back on page 1 for some of my keywords and within the top 100 for a whole heap of others. Cocoocoo is giving sound advice I feel. You can rank and bank for most things within a couple of months or pi$$ fart around with penalised domains until your bust.

Yep, linkbuilding is continuing to work. The key is to focus on higher quality backlinks, especially post-Penguin.

This means backlinks from high PageRank domains, with high quality content if possible. Google's getting better and better at determining the quality of the content, which in turn is affecting the overall effectiveness of the backlinks.

Google knows about low-quality duplicate and spun content generated on Web 2.0 properties, thus you need to think outside of the box if you use those methods and/or focus on the higher quality stuff to begin with.

    Of course, linkbuilding still workalbe.
Just remember to focus on higher quality backlinks which google loved.
While make sure to diversify of your link, not only article, blog, but also Video, Classified, etc.
As much as you can ......

Honestly I think this is a load of shit, no offense. I say this because one of my hardest hit sites has about 75 posts of high quality (many articles are 700+ words written by a high quality writer) unique content. I was even shifting my posts to less keyword based 3 months before penguin. It's a 12 year old EMD domain with a solid link structure. I've added content to it and it doesn't matter. Google just doesn't like the site any longer.

It went from ranking number 1 for multiple keywords including a 70K+ one to obscurity. None of the 25+ keywords I track rank within the top 250 except for 2 now which are both over 200.

I'm finding the whole social thing to be a waste of time unless they are real - anything faked just gives no results. If you can genuinly get something viral and well shared it seems to give a great boost. I just ranked a page top 3 (on a fairly easy term admittedly) with nothing other 1 facebook post from me. No links - nothing but that one post. Then it went a bit viral and started ranking.

Social just isn't worth the effort in my eyes unless it's genuine.

So marketing with Social networks isn't about fake likes/shares/retweets etc. It's all about getting that one post right using the right account with the right friends/followers and then sitting back and watching it happen. Too much like white hat for my liking I tell you.
