The reason that the traditional LW is not as effective is that Google does not like it when people are trying to blatantly influence their search results which is what a LW (or any backlinking strategy for that matter) is doing.

The only way to effectively make things look natural is to not leave any footprints i.e. be random.

There are many ways to do this. For example:

1. Using multiple accounts

2. Using proxies

3. Do not link in preset plan or pattern.

It will sometimes, and it won't other times. You should test and track as this is the only way you will really know what is working for you.

With that said, I see much better results from taking a more randomized, "natural" approach to backlinking.
