cant find any guide on this in bhw search. any suggestions?

Keep it consistent with percentage rates within a margin; +5-10% each month. Over time, you'll start to get some naturally - especially if your website can be cited as a resource.
 
You can call it drip feed. It's just to create backlinks as time goes by, instead of posting all links on the same timeframe.
 
Building quality backlinks should be the high priority not providing high link velocity.
 
Look at your competitors and top 3 sites for your search term, then copy them
 
10-15 quality of links per month will be the good start

even 10 links from nothing is a 1000% increase in backlinks. thats definitely spiky.

Start with ONE quality link, then build more only after processed in GSC and you see ranking kick in.

Finally always make different anchor text for each link.
 
It depends A LOT on the type of websites you’re getting your back links from. A new site can handle much more than 10 links if they’re high quality (contextual, do follow, low obl, legit sites)
