Is exchanging link a good practice in terms of SEO. Is my ranking effected if I allow external links on blogroll or inner posts?

I have had some success with link exchange. Don't know how much difference in weight there is between 1way and two way links though?

Blog roll external links is ok, as long as you link to quality domains, and also don't want too many external links.

In order to have a natural link profile, it may be good to have a certain percentage of reciprocal links, especially if you have a lot of links pointing to your website. Sitewide links will not hurt your rankings, if links are relevant to your website (=they look natural). In order to make sure your website looks natural, you need to link to other relevant websites as well. On one of my websites, rankings increased after adding some relevant links in my content. Website that doesn't link to other website doesn't play internet game, which means that it's not natural.

Links exchange doesnt work anymore.. I just heard them to other forums. I think its because of google updates.

I don't use sitewide links anymore (I'm seeing a lot of sites getting in trouble for that). I try to get 1 link from homepage (not footer) or link from content.

Opportunist86,

You will want to take a look at what Google considers as unacceptable in terms of link exchanges. It is not quite clear what Google means by link-based manipulation. Many linking techniques even those considered white hat, have now come under a cloud of confusion.

However, it is quite clear that Penguin is targeting websites that are building a powerful backlink profile through unnatural link exchanges. This also does not mean that all reciprocal linking is frowned upon by Google. It comes down to, how natural is your link exchange, and the level of mutually correlated content. Therefore, if you are depending on link exchanges and backlink warehousing, it is obviously out of the question now. Even when you are exchanging links across websites with co-related topics, it is necessary to consider the quality of the content on these sites because of the Panda update.

These links may shed more light on the topic for you,

Links to homepages or some specific pages will be O.K but I don't think it will be a good idea to have site wide links with the same anchor text on every page and especially when the site is really big with 200+ indexed pages.
