Ook so theeeeoretically, if one knew where to legitimately drop a link to one's website on a bunch of rando spots on the internet, is that a good idea?

I'm strictly speaking about do-follow hrefs; if I'm able to drop those, in a non-spammy way, on a website... is there any negative side to this?

Without more detail on what you're planning... that's basically what this entire section of the forum is about.

As far as a negative side... you don't want to accidentally negative-SEO yourself linking from spammy penalized sites or something.

And if you're dropping them in really obscure places with no authority and unrelated content then you're probably not going to get a massive push from it other than helping you diversify and fill out your link profile.

But basically you just came to a forum predominantly focused on linkbuilding and said, "Hey if I figure out how to do linkbuilding will that be a good thing?"

Ok excellent. I’ll keep doing my research and reading.

In general, what I gather from what you’ve said is to drop it into moz.com before deciding I want to link myself from it?

The types of sites I’m talking about are more or less “profile” sites, where you can sign up, upload an avatar, write a blurb about yourself. For example, one of the more detailed ones is “Alignable”, which is more of a business directory but *may* be on the spammy side (they seems to abuse their users in their app, but don’t necessarily host or malware).

Other sites are more simple than Alignable, simply allowing you to write a blurb and link your site.

Thoughts?

Keep your link profile natural looking. A bunch of links suddenly popping up on 2.0's all over the place won't look natural.

focus on few but quality links with good metrics, will help you a lot with rankings
