Link Building Strategies?

Anybody willing to share their link building strategies that they are using for clients? Interested in knowing what strategies (article marketing, video marketing, social bookmarking, etc.) you're finding the most success with. Do you find grey hat stuff (blog commenting, forum posting, forum profiles, etc.) appropriate and effective for brick and mortar businesses? Any free or paid tools you recommend to automate the process or any recommended outsourcers you've had success with? 1st post, so if this post is more appropriate in another forum, I apologize.
