Does Google penalize for having a large number of links from pages unrelated to your page. For example, say I have a page about movies and have a large number of back links from gardening sites. Also, by large number I mean around 10,000 - 20,000 back links.

You'll not get penalized. Just that those 10K+ links might be 'discounted' and they usually are not as effective as one strong (high PR) contextual link from an authority site.

No penalty for bad links.

If anyone tells you otherwise, punch them in the face.

+1 for no penalty for bad links.

Firing 999,999,999,999 porn links to cnn.com and they'll
just give you a pat on the shoulder for the effort.

Google will simply disregards these bad, irrelevant backlinks, but you should not incur any penalty of any kind.

However, if Google suspects or confirms you are buying and selling backlinks, they could issue a penalty accordingly.

That is my understanding.

Are you talking about a SB- or Xrumer blast?

If your domain have some age, then does it not hurt your site. But it won't have the same affect as a few high quality links.

by the numbers you are talking i guess its SB or XR links. its a unclear one as some sites i have tested this with rocket, others have have had no effect but none have been penalised or de indexed.

If you have 20,000 spam blog comments or xrumer links and no other links on your site it won't do anything good for you.

Why are you posting this in the whitehat section? Doesn't sound very whitehat to me lol

I blasted my competitor site with 100k live SB comments with all porn KW's in anchor.
The site was ranking #1 for past 2 yrs.
Here are the result after blast.
