Link building query

I saw some sites do this. Doesn't google punish this sort of thing? Isn't it misleading users?
If its 301, no punishment, people change their domain names and brands. So its natural thing. But we use it in BH way so really hard for google to find sites doing it in good way or bad way. Hope you understand what i am trying to say here.

Thanks for responding. But this isn't a 301 redirect. This is just like this: www.google.com

Text says google but site leads to yahoo. How can google not punish this?

If its not 301, no link juice or milk pass. But the thing you are talking about is not punishable unless that site lead you to virus related or popups shit.

Can I just confirm that in the example I posted ie. www.google.com

No link juice would pass to yahoo.com (the link)? Reason because google has detected that there is a difference between the anchor text (ie. www.google.com) and the link yahoo.com?

Is that not the same as saying Click Here to go back to this thread? Why would you be punished for that?
The link juice would go to the URL, not to the "Click Here" text.

I am not sure, new to SEO / link building.

Cause you are representing that you are sending the users to google.com but they end up on yahoo.com?

Link would be followed and juice would be passed but relevancy signal for anchor text wouldn’t. I can’t really think of a situation where you’d want to do this, would it not be better to use words instead of a url - so in the google.com example, linking with anchor text “major global search engine” or something like that?

Look at it this way. Links are crawled by robots called crawlers. Crawlers jump from link to link and leave points behind each time they jump. How many points you get depends on a bunch of stuff but that is not the point here. The point here is that crawlers can not read anything but your robots.txt file. As such, crawlers only see where your link goes, not what you called the link. Therefore, link juice is passed via links, not anchor text. However, anchor text does play a role in all this so do try and match your anchor to the actual link.

Thank you, noted. I saw this on another site and just found it odd. Thought it was some seo trick.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Asayus.
