I've read on here multiple times that if I post my link for my website's mainpage on, for example, FaceBook, that it only counts as one link, which I agree with.

Now, for example, if I post a blog article on say, Blogger and I include 2 links that are:

mywebsite.com/product/duck
mywebsite.com/product/sheep

Then a week later, I post another blog post on the same site and post these 2 links:

mywebsite.com/product/goat
mywebsite.com/product/hamster

Does this count as 1 link or 4 separate links?

The reason I ask is because I'm struggling to find new places to post blog posts.

Thanks

it's 4 links for your entire domain, but only 1 link for each one of the 4 pages.

And this is important because google doesn't rank entire sites, it ranks pages, so if you want to rank for the word "duck" and an expert recommends that you get 15 backlinks to rank for the word "duck" then you need to point all of those 15 backlinks to the page that targets the word "duck" (which, in your case, is mywebsite.com/product/duck)

Rankings, backlinks and anchor texts always work on a per-page basis.

Something else that I'd like to point out is that the 4 backlinks you got still come from only 1 domain, and this is important because google weighs RDs (Referring Domains, so Domains) more heavily than backlinks.

So, you could get...

- 4 links from blogger
- 1 link from tumblr
- 13 links from wordpress
- 5 links from pinterest

So, you would tend to be happy thinking "woohoo, I've got 23 backlinks from top sites", but in reality google doesn't view your backlinking profile as rosy as you do because when links are so easy (and free) to get google devalues them (removes their ranking power).

So, in reality, in google's eyes you still have 23 backlinks in total, but you only have 4 RDs (Referring Domains), because all of your backlinks come from 4 sites only (blogger, tumblr, wordpress, and pinterest).

If one of your competitors was to have, for example...

-1 link from blogger
-1 link from tumblr
-1 link from wordpress
-1 link from pinterest
-1 link from wix

... then - all things being equal - they would outrank you for your target keyword simply because they have more RDs than you. Google simply values RDs more than backlinks, which is why we all fight tooth and nail over getting more RDs instead of getting more backlinks :)

The reason I ask is because I'm struggling to find new places to post blog posts.
plenty of web 2.0s to put your backlinks on, just do a google search for 'best web 2.0s", or "list of backlink sites like blogger", or whatever. And if you look well enough I'm sure you will find plenty of web 2.0s on BHW, too (even I have shared several such lists in the last 2 years).

But web 2.0s are not very good because - remember - when a source of backlinks is easy and free to get google devalues it because everyone has access to it. So, even if you find 50-60 such web 2.0s that you can get backlinks from, in the end it's not worth the trouble for many reasons:

- google doesn't care about free and easy to get sources
- these platforms themselves do nasty tricks to your backlinks

I've built 41 backlinks on these platforms about 2 years ago and after 3 months only 9 of them were still live, or indexed in google. The rest of them have either been de-indexed by google, or they have been nofollow'd by the web 2.0 sites themeselves, or they've ghosted my content, or closed my account, or forced me to upgrade in order to keep my links alive, and so on... A lot of headaches with web 2.0 sites, and for what? Just so you can get 50 links that amount to nothing because one of the ultra rich marketers buys a backlink from Cosmopolitan for $30,000 and outranks you with 1 backlink? Nah, that's not efficient link building :)

A detailed explanation, thanks @tazarbm

By now you could have got your answer,
And the truth is, when it comes to number of backlinks it is 4

How about sub-domains?

@tazarbm Thank you for such a detailed reply. I did forget to add that I'm actually using free blogging sites mainly for keywords but you answered that, thank you. I'm currently working through a list of 450 sites that someone shared, I think 2 years ago! Some are outdated nowbut I still appreciate the effort of whoever wrote it.

Once again thank you.
