Link building on new site, Does it matter.

Hi Guys and Girls,

I have a new business venture and well it's important to me that the site ranks high.

For the past 4months I've had the domain i've had 403 forbidden, since it was merely just a blank site. Anyhow, heres my question

Does link building even work on new sites? I could be wrong I've heard that Google puts new sites into a limbo sandbox for 7-8months so linking doesn't help?

Please could someone ask this preheps easy question for most to answer, Thanks.

Linkbuilding definitely works on new sites. That's how people get new sites to rank in weeks or even days sometimes.

Just go slowly, consistently and create diverse links.

In other words, create around about the same number of links every day for the first month or two, don't go mad and create 10000 on day one and then nothing on day two. Try get links from multiple web site types, blogs, web 2.0, articles, forums etc.

Personally I recommend that you do NOT 'ping' your links or even add them to an RSS feed, I find much better results if google finds them naturally. This issue is debatable though.

I linkbuild new sites although with more caution than sites that have some age. Made a site last week and built some links and it is moving nicely, very close to page 1 right now.

I also avoid pinging unless I find a high PR page that I comment or post to manually, then I go ahead an Ping but I avoid it on a large scale as I want the links do be discovered gradually for the most part.
 
These other folks are correct, new sites DO need backlinks if they want to rank- acquire backlinks slowly and wait for the google dance. Another important consideration would be the long term velocity in which you build links. Consistency is important. Stick with contextual backlinks and your website should rank well.

Aside from building backlinks, make sure your website is optimized properly. From my experience, a well optimized website is the foundation of a long term seo campaign.
 
New sites need backlinks as new born babies need milk to grow.

Thanks for all the nice replys, whats 'pinging' in terms of SEO? I know what it means for networking ping backs but not in SEO.
 
I always start off with dirrctory listings on new sites maybe coupled with some social bookmarks.

But i never go over 50 links in the first week, helps stay out of the sandbox :)

Thanks for your reply, can I have those directory sites if you don;t mind.
 
It depends on your skill set. For example, I can rank a new website #1 in under 2 weeks. Many people find new sites a challenge but it all boils down to what you know.

In any case start link building slowly and then scale up.
 
You want quality links at first and don't blast 1,000,000 the first day. Take it slow.
 
First week concentrate really quality links, like announce blog on wordpress support forum and claim technorati blog, create tumblr blog with backlink to your site etc. Sandboxing is such a mysterious thing, sometimes all is done correctly and site still gets sandboxed, you have to keep building links even then.
