I am a bit confused about link building for travel website. We have a company and we provide Safari, tour, trek etc and I need help regarding where to start the link building process to rank well on google. I want to build link on travel related sites only if that's possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to equip yourself with basic to advanced Search Engine Optimization skills.

You can try to search on this Forum how to Create a Proper and safe link building or you can learn SEO or you can hire a SEO Expert to take care to your site.
Because it is very dangerous if you don't know what you do.

I know some SEO technique but I am not an expert in niche related link building technique. So, I need someone to help develop links on a travel site. Where should I start. Should I use articles and create web 2.0 properties.

Dude, you either have the budget or you don't. You wanna build links by yourslef? You wanna buy links for $5 on Fiverr? Let me tell you something. That ain't gonna work.

Ask yourself- What are my goals and what is mu budget?

[x] This.

if you don't have budget, there's plenty of ways to build travel links, but they take time + effort - there's no shortcuts

some ideas to get links from free, good, and relevant sites and even your competitors' sites:

biz directories
niche directories
videos [low competition, high visibility]
css gallery links
leverage news [create it, curate it, be a thought leader, do something newsworthy and tell the world]
charity tie ins
use niche celebs in your content marketing
write the content which others aren't writing to fulfill the search needs of your users
publish event listings on your site, mark em up using schema.org /microformats
repurpose data visually/interactively
cash in on UGC + reviews [+CTR on paid ads too]

Don't be confuse. You can create travel related infographics (Safari related). You'll get more referral inbound links. You can create Presentation, Ebooks and much more.

Only main fact you need to invest content. Each and every strategy need fresh and unique content. So, try out content marketing strategy. Cheers :)

I can hook you up with a travel related network where you buy/exchange links at about $1.40 link but I have to look it up

Use Google to find out if there are any webmasters looking to exchange links in travel niche. That'd be a cool start!

Here's a little trick to ride the link juice of news relevant sites: setup a google alert for sites in your niche, then when you see someone has posted something new, make sure you comment as soon as possible. When their site starts to see link juice, you get some too. This is a really simple way to find ever increasing link opportunities, easily and for free.

Analyze what your competition is doing and try to get as many links as possible from there!!

Yes build backlinks manually and avoid software if you want to do well with ranking your website and also be careful of fake seo sellers who will see you as easy $.

There are too many service provider available in the market place for link building. I suggest you to try guest posting service on your related niche. You will see the SERP improvement for sure.

Travel is high competative niche and you have a lot of competitor in the market, but if your site is new then you have to make his domain more authority then it'll be rank soon.

1. Guest Posts on high travel relevant blogs
2. Social media compaign
3. Forum posting on high PR travel forum
4. Private blog network links
5. Web 2.0 creation with spun content

Don't worry, it is possible. you should build link in different web2 property site and also different travel related forum and social bookmarking site. If you expert at seo then you can do it. Otherwise you should be hire a seo expert. If you want you can hire me because I am a seo expert.
