Link building citations

I have a competitor who is doing fairly well rank wise and he has no back links that matter but what I noticed him doing is building backlinks to his citations and using exact match anchor text for the keywords he’s targeting. Any one have experience with this ?

Seems safe to use the citations as a buffer and link building them so they rank for his keyword in turn pushing the main money site up because those citation link to the money site
 
Does anyone have experience with this
 
Worth looking into what else the competitor is doing on the site (UX, content, etc) as he may have the solution vs anything else.
 
Thanks for contributing guys i keep a eagle eye on the competitors. I figured since they usually are very massive domains with lots of pages and links in and out that it would be a good buffer and send link juice to the main domain nice filtered.
 
Based on how Google's E-A-T update works, I believe CITATIONS will play a bigger role in boosting domain authority which in turn impacts RANKING

You have to get citations from the right sources though. You can't just blast comments with unlinked mentions of your brand.
 
I think uses the generic keywords, Naked url and brand url. It's are used well.

They're basically using them as parasites and taking advantage of their high domain authority. I do something similar with my local SEO clients

So you build backlinks to your local clients citations? if so what kind?

PBN posts, but not for all the citations. But only the top ones as that will worth the money spent.
