Honestly, link building isn't dead - it's just grown up
Guest posts still matter if they're done the right way. A link on a genuine website, inside useful content, still helps with trust and visibility. What's losing value is the "let's place 50 links this month and rank overnight" mindset.
Right now, slow and natural wins. Fewer links, better sites, real context. It may feel boring compared to fast promotion, but it actually lasts longer and keeps you safe from future updates.

There is definitely a shift happening, but it’s not away from links. It’s away from low context links. Google’s AI Overviews and LLM powered results rely heavily on content understanding and source trust, and links are still one of the strongest trust signals.

Link building still works, but not the old spammy way. Google still trusts good links from real, relevant websites. What’s declining is low-quality link placement.
Fast promotion gives quick results, but strong guest post links build long-term trust and rankings.

While many people want rapid results, I have found that those shortcuts usually lead to algorithmic penalties within a few months. High quality guest posts on real sites with traffic remain the most consistent way to build long term authority.

You have a point, but what is actually dying or declining like you said is mass guest post spam. For people who are still strategic, of cos it still works. The truth is that people want shortcuts. But in the real sense of things, real guest posts take effort, wether in cost, or slower result. Links are still part of the long game.

Building links in guest posts IS a thing today. You do need to build high value backlinks through guest posting and as long as the sites you guest post to, are authoritative and don't use blackhat techniques to rank, then you are on your way to build a very beneficial backlink empire (for your website or blog).
