    Greetings BHW.

So I am venturing for the first time into link building for a legitimate real world business. It should be relatively easy to rank 1st on Google.

I found that the leading competitor has only 266 backlinks. The report generated told me to use the other websites name in my anchor text. I don't understand why I would do that, wouldn't that have negative effects since it is a real world business?

Thanks for the help in advance :)

I believe that the report, possibly autogenerated, looks at your competitors anchor text to determine how you should approach your campaign. Atleast that's what I'm assuming as I don't know where the report came from.

You don't really want to utilize that strategy, that would be fine if you planned on outranking your compteitor for THEIR business/website name.

What you need to do is build links, with the anchor text being your core business/services keyword. For example, los angeles "service".

Go on - use their business name for anchor text.

I love outranking a competitor for their own name!

Just do the other stuff as well.

It's also about page rank not just backlinks.

The quality of links is what holds power not the amount.

Yeah google is doing away with PR so one shouldnt do to
    much worrying about it.

But i wouldnt suggest using a competitors site name unless it is a well established company. Because ppl will search for it by name.

But be careful when doing this because it could lead to some issues down the line

I would just go for the keywords that describe the business because chances
are if the top spot is just a brick and mortar business they wont know too
much about SEO, and therefore when they created their links
They just used the company name.

    hope this helps

Thats interesting - what do you consider is the next best method to determine the general authority of a domain given your lack of concern around the possible loss of PR? We all seek out the most powerful links to help our sites gain momentum in the serps and from where I am sitting either TLD PR or indeed page PR is currently the best factor in understanding the quality and authority of a potential link prospect.

That report that you got is telling you that because, to google, having all your links have the same anchor text is considered spammy. If you want to get higher results, then it's best to build about 60-70% for your main keyword, 20-30% for secondary keywords, and then 5-10% for generic keywords (i.e. "click here", or "look at this", or even just your URL works as well)

    I couldn't disagree more.

PR is easy to get, simply link from high PR sites to your site and the link juice will flow. Links from a variety of different IPs regardless of PR will put you in a much better position than just focusing on PR alone.

I find the the Alexa ranking will tell you much more about the site, mainly how active the site is. This in turn will give you an idea how often Google crawls it and how much value it will hold for you, as a potential link source.

Hmm - are you aware of how inaccurate and easy to manipulate Alexa rankings are? I have only just recently tested this and upped Alexa rank by nearly 3 mill in just two days of experiements.

PR continues to be a G00gle measure of what it considers a website to be about in many different aspects all expressed outwardly to the public as a rating. As a result, this in my mind is still the best measure regardless of how the PR come to be attributed to the site in question - after all, its G00gle themselves (via the algo) which apportion the PR.

You have your opinion and do whats works best for you - opinions are what make this forum great.....

Too true, I too have tested the Alexa theory and have made the Alexa ranking for one of my sites drop like a stone. But, I still find this more trustworthy than PR - as I'm writing i'm starting to question myself though

Maybe its a bit of both PR and Alexa....but then there is talk G are going to drop PR altogether as it is misunderstood, but thats for another thread I think.

    All the best :)
