Does any know of a tool that can be used to audit backlinks? I suspect that it's largely speculative on what makes a good or bad link, so maybe nothing exists.

But I had in mind there might be a tool that will check if a URL linking to you is indexed or not, and perhaps make some judgements on OBL and content quality...

- ahrefs
- majestic
- opensitexplorer
- linkdetective
- G webmaster tools

Not sure if those tools were the ones that you were looking for, but they server the purpose of analysing backlinks.

Yeah I've got an ahrefs subscription (love it). I guess I'm not sure of how best to use it to look for and identify bad links though.

For example, one of my sites (site A) got hit by Penguin when it first rolled out and I've never worked to recover it. That site links to another one of my sites (site B). In ahrefs for B it shows A as every sign of being a good backlink, high ahrefs rank etc - but I KNOW that the linking domain A has a penalty against it.

That got me wondering if there was a tool that would take all your backlinks, and run some sort of check on that page.

But I guess my penalised domain is still indexed, it just doesn't rank - so how do you tell... Maybe even with a penalty, it's still a good backlink.
