Wonder what your thoughts are on this?

The like button is easy to spot and easily utilized in the upper right hand corner of my website, next to a LinkedIn share and Tweet, in a horizontal line. So I have two options when someone comes to the site and clicks that 'like' button.

I can have it 'like' my fan page and gain me a fan.

I can have it 'like' my web site, which posts to their profile that they like the website, which helps spread the word.

Which should I go with? Fan page fans or spreading the world through web site likes? As far as I know, when someone likes the fan page, it isn't necessarily put on their profile.

Any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages to both?

Thanks!

Liking an external url will always pull up an image, title and description provided you have this og:meta data in your head.

Liking an internal FB page will only show up as a line of text in the news feed whereas an external will stand out more with its image.

#Perhaps you should put a like button for your internal FB page in the top right. and a like button for individual pages somewhere close to the content.

OK. But the way I just understand you, is that the liking a Facebook Fan page only shows up as a line of text and that liking mysite.com will pop up an imagine, title and description and stand out from the crowd.. So that makes liking the site.com preferable - but you say go the other way, and link to the Facebook fan page to gather more fans?

This is just on my home page, it's basically a one-screen landing page so first impression is everything. The content is after 'join now,' so really all I want to do is connect them with me through that like button in the best way possible. And I'm not sure if that's by having them like site.com or facebook.com/fanpage

I agree, for deeper in the page. But on that home page, that landing page, you've got that one spot to get a click, which way do you want it going? My format doesn't really allow doing both right in one spot - it's one of the slim horizontal rows, LinkedIn Tweet Like.

So where should the like go in that circumstance?
