LFE Install issue

I am having a problem on the initial installation saying 'tmp/' folder or 'config.inc.php' is unwrittable. I tried chmodding it to every known combination to no avail. I am on a hostgator VPS.

Any help would be appreciated

If you bought LFE legit, they install it for you free of charge if you ask them.
