Has anyone ever tried just to let a site rank itself? I started a blog based on my philosophies, writing, and other things I want to write about. It has it's own domain and is linked to blogger. Eventually I want to get separate hosting and run my own blog seperate of blogger, have an online store on my site and any other projects im working on. I'm not looking to hit any certain niche UNTIL my website makes a niche of its own. Anyone have experience or insight or advice?

If it is a highly searched niche than blogger bloags will get natural traffic. However what your going for is a smaller more targeted niche. I would keep pushing links to it and reach out to other communities in that niche.

Essentially you're going to need a way to establish some authority with your site then. If you're not going to do any backlinking campaigns, you're at least going to have to get the word out about your site and be very active. Start interacting with other bloggers who talk about topics you're interested in, and parlay that into mentions, etc on bigger blogs that can drive traffic. Once people know about your site and its content, then you might start picking up some natural links. Otherwise if it's just you and a blog, you could be waiting ages to get anywhere with Google.

With todays competition it is almost impossible to rank at some high position just by it self

I had multiple niche blogs and sites where i posted a lot of unique content for a long time, but it only gained low position rankings
Most of the time i only made to 2nd page's of search engines,
So if niche is well searched, then you surely need some SEO and Social media tactics to rank for good

But there are always exceptions to these, who knows you can also hit a undiscovered popular niche

It depends on what you are targeting. You will need SEO to rank your site for keywords that people are competing for.

Depending on the main keywords of your site, it is certainly possible (if the content is decent to awsome). However, it could take ages to rank a website for a competitive keyword, without any backlink.

There is no definitive keyword because my posts are sporadic and random. I have this from ebay business philosophy, to internet friendships, to why college isnt considered an opportunty anymore. Also it will soon have MY ebay business on there which is a niche business

It depends on the niche and the competition, it's possible but difficult.

No, this won't work. If you want search traffic you need to write about something people search for in the first place. You might find some seemingly successful blogs who post just about anything and get tons of comments and interaction, but their secret is their relationships with blogosphere. Oftentimes if you check their organic traffic they got none or very little. Hundreds of comments come from other blog owners they built relationships with.

In addition, even if you succeed at this your conversion rate will be very low. You need targeted visitors, not just any visitors. And to get targeted visitors you need targeted keywords.

You can rank blog just like that if you manage to find a niche with no competition. Good luck with that though :)

Possible with non-commercial keywords. I have some sites with some educational content taken from books, and they rank. Wit competitive keywords I'd say no, you would need some initial publicity either from backlinks or from bought/social traffic.
