    Sex can be fun.

OK, we talked about sex, so now let's talk about membership or paid sites!

There is a lot of talk on the various boards about membership sites and even BHW is setting up one which will be of great benefit to its members and I think benefits are what will make a pay site work.

    A few questions:

(Obviously we are not talking about adult sites as there is such a proliferation of those puppies!)

    (1) What are people looking for?

    (2) What do they want in a pay site?

    (3) What is a good price point for a pay site?

    (4) Should a pay site be run on a one-time fee or recurring monthly billing?

    (5) How should a pay site best be promoted?

    (6) If marketed trhough affiliates, what should be the affiliate commission structure?

Just a few thoughts and questions, so add your own as well!

    what an opener...

and an even bigger let down...

just committed one of the biggest "sins"...

the title/headline is totally incongruent with your message...

you lead us on to which i'm thinking adult niche ideas etc...

and the carpet gets whipped up from under our feet...

then you ask the victims for something of value after that...

sorry just not impressed at all yet just thought i'd share that thought with you...

Porn and adult are so "It's been done!", I'm wondering about other venues!

    P.S.

    You did look, after all!

Sex in almost any form sells and we already know that!

Good point, which leads to yet another avenue of discussion!

Is there really anything profitable enough to do on the net other than adult?

I have to agree with some of these statements... but I am not here to taint this thread.

I would say there are tons of things to do on the net that can make money. But from my standpoint I am more on the side of inventing new technologies on the web - or just making what already exists better.

So, I would tend to develop startups... Or better yet ... empower web startups with the right tools. Can't go wrong there ...web is an undeniable part of today's world.

Getting back to your question.... as far as memberships go....I tend to believe in two things - the first being the absolutely critical in my opinion.

    1. GIVE THEM SOMETHING FREE.

I like to give away services, it builds customer loyalty and your customer database at that same time for those that find REAL value in your service or product. - One particular area I am involved in is unified messaging so if you take someone like Grand Central (a competitor of ours).... It's pure genius to 'give away' accounts in a beta mode. Especially in telecom. Your giving away something people become dependent on. I am not saying to do this for the mere sake of manipulating consumers. But it plays a heavy role and is quite clever in a business model. My businesses are centralized around this exact practice.

The fact is when other services or features are introduced at a few pennies/dollas more - a large portion of users will find real value in paying a fair price point for those extra features.

That completely coincides with something like BHW or any good business for that matter. FREE forum with good people/good info.

Then when the database has acquired a substantial amount of users..... its time to monetize by offering additional features and nominal rates. Some will see the value ...and some won't. There also enters the opportunity to merchandise.

    2. Favorable pricing for up front fees.

Again, something I find absolutely critical. Favorable pricing for up front buyers in a tiered fashion. I tend to be a consumer who looks for real value in things, products or services.

I tend to take advantage of more offers that offer discount to pay for the year in full at a lower cost. This undoubtedly is an essential element. Magazine subscriptions have used this mean for a long time. In and instance like that you can save sometimes 70% of newsstand prices. That is just a brief example but obviously you have seen this applied to many other businesses.

I don't pay retail for anything. If I have to it's probably not worth it.

Of course these are just some of my thoughts.

    Excellent and informative response!

Hey, I did a bit of "bait-and-switch" in this post but Sears did it for years and made millions!

Seems difficult to get people's attention around here sometimes!
