I would like to know peoples opinion on ghost followers/inactive followers. I read in another thread that the OP thinks they punish more than help because of engagement rate and that makes sense to me but it also makes sense to want them to continue following you as it increase your follower number which helps with gaining new potentially active followers. What does everyone think? Should we strive to purge them from our accounts? Are they helpful? IDK :/

Me personally would rather have ghost followers actually unfollow from my account. I would rather have 100 followers with 100 likes on each picture than 1 million followers and 1000 likes on each picture. There is a very popular app called Followers for Instagram I believe and it shows who isn't following you back, vise versa, engagement, etc. Its a free app. But for $1 you can see your ghost followers and block them (makes them unfollow). Of course you don't have to block all ghost followers.
 
Please someone tell me if it makes sense: I had like 35k followers with an average of 1050 likes per pictures that was increasing day after day. One day (yes it might be really stupid) I went on an app that you follow people and than get followers I wanted to try a trick of a guy that was following with multiple accounts and then getting all the followers on only the main account. So I did that and got like 2000 followers that turned into GHOST followers and since then my likes average is 860 with 37k followers ...!! I will try to block as many ghost followers and hopefully come back to normal.
 
When you say ghost/inactive followers, do you mean accounts that were once active? Or do you mean purchased followers (bots) to help buff up the follower count? If you mean the former, which I think you mean, then I don't think it would be too much of an issue. I think it would do harm by deleting people who are inactive because if they were once active and involved with your page (engaging at one point), then you could be throwing away potential engagement at some time in the future should they ever choose to be active again. That would be like a company removing people from an e-mail list since they aren't getting a response from them when they send offers out. That's what it would feel like to me, anyways.

EDIT: but then again, I am fairly new to IG marketing, so I am probably thinking the wrong way on this.
 
UPDATE: Im pretty sure having a lot of ghost followers reduces the engagement but you can't remove them now since only 150 likers appear per photo ! So you might unfollow active users!
 
Interesting. How do you determine who is a ghost follower? I am going to try and reduce the amount of ghost folllowers I have because engagement means a lot to me.

Like I said, get the free app, pay the $1 add-on, check out who hasn't liked any of your pics, block them. If I was you I would block people that haven't liked any pics.
 
It never made much scene to me to buy fake followers because you can get real followers for free from following, liking and commenting pretty fast if you have a good account and are following, liking and commenting targeted users. I understand the whole concept, but it's just not worth it to me I guess.
 
Having Ghost followers doesnot effects you in any sense, Besides in my experience it only help you gain followers easily.
Also I wont dare to remove users its just a waste of time.

maybe it depends for people or maybe you already have more targeted followers but me once I had more ghost followers my engagement decreased why would it be a coincidence when you think about it thats really just my opinion tho

I believe, once they are inactive, the chances to get them active again are pretty low.

Also, have in mind this:

There are some followers that are really pain in the ass in terms of engagement:

The ones that have f.e. 200 followers and they are following 4K

I don't really want those users, even if the become active again, the chances to get likes from them are too low, having in mind that their wall is going to be crowded of 4000 following feeds....

What about having the ability to filter your followers by number of followings they have.

I think I will get rid of followers that are following more than... lets say 2000 to 10K

the reason is cause they are useless, they will hardly see your picture and like it

Yeah, I definitely see what you're saying. That's a point that I didn't think about.
