Just look closely.. there is no + sign at the end of 1st and 2nd line.. so you are adding two 11 and few 1s

This problem isn't formatted correctly, which is where everyone's confusion is drawn from. The people getting 1 and 31, aren't following order of operations (PEMDAS). The people getting 11 or 12 assume you add from line to line when in reality there is no addition sign so some add 11 rather than two 1's. Because of the lack of structure, there is no correct answer, just different ways of interpreting the problem.
Yes making the answer 31, took me all of a split second to work it out.
